On the lands of Orastie, in the shadow of Sarmizegetusa – the sacred heart of the Dacian kingdom – the folk medical traditions were extremely powerful. In 1697, these traditions led to the foundation of a pharmacy, “At the Golden Lion”, on whose shelves remedies made of medicinal plants could be found.

The man who, at the beginning of the 20th century, would place the folk wisdom under the patronage of science was Andrei Farago, a visionary pharmacist, whose ardent passion was medicinal plants. Licensed in pharmacy in Vienna, he enters, through marriage, the family who owned the pharmacy of Orastie in 1908. Being a practical and innovative spirit, he uses all his energy and intelligence to turn the small pharmacy into a standard of Romanian fitotherapy.

Thus, “DIGITALIS the First Romanian Cooperative for Medicinal Plants Cultivation Orastie”, today Fares Bio Vital Laboratories, is born in 1929. Here, plants were cultivated, then coming to life as tea, syrup, essential oil, and the company had a hothouse, extractors, workshops and machinery to condition and cut plants, as well as laboratories for analysis. The scientific results, quality and originality of the products made here conquered both the specialists and people in pain.

As appreciation for the extraordinary merits of the company he led, Andrei Farago receives the royal distinction “1st Class Commercial and Industrial Merit” in 1934. After coming out of the shadow in which it found itself as a consequence of nationalization during communism, detachment from the comuniste structure named „Plafar” in 1990, and privatization in 1995, Fares is today, 80 years from its foundation, the Romanian company with sole Romanian capital, being number one on the herbal remedies market in Romania.

The secret recipe for success? Respect towards traditions, towards the inherited values that oblige and motivate us, and at the same time respect towards the consumer and attention to their concrete needs generated by the modern times we live in. Seen in this light, the steps taken in the last years appear as natural:
-resuming the cultivation of medicinal plants (over 200 hectares);
-initiation of ecological crops;
-complete modernization of the manufacturing lines and laboratories;
-implementing ISO 9001:2008 quality management system (certified by TŰV Rheinland) and HACCP system of food safety;
-certification for compliance with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) requirements, issued by National Medicines Agency from Romania.
All these lead to products of guaranteed permanent high quality.

Quality and respect towards the consumer also means knowing how to select and combine the plants, valorizing tradition and benefiting from the latest scientific discoveries, which our doctors, pharmacists, biologists and chemists do in our research laboratories every day. Last, but not least, it is about evaluating the therapeutic efficiency of our products, which consents the justice of the chosen formula. We started a comprehensive program of studies together with teachers of University Clinics, medical specialists and general practitioners, which runs and is expanding: already over 30 physicians and 650 patients participated in evaluation.

This would not be possible without the people who dedicate their lives to medicinal plants, as at Fares the shareholders and employees work together with love and professionalism so that these principles can come to life as tea, syrup, essential oil, ointment and cream.
